About Qualidata Network Solutions for your qualitative data

Welcome to QualidataNet - the network for archiving and providing qualitative research data. QualidataNet is a service of the German National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) and part of the Consortium for the Social, Educational, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (KonsortSWD).

As a ‚central point of entry‘, QualidataNet bundles information on research data and offerings from various archiving infrastructures. The network helps you to find suitable archiving partners and provides information on the management, access and re-use of qualitative research data.

You are a researcher and would like to share your data with other researchers or you are looking for specific scientific content?

We are happy to support you and advise you on your options free of charge. Please feel free to contact us.

Research data management The five stages of the data lifecycle

The data lifecycle illustrates the various stages that research data can go through. The research data management of qualitative data involves cyclical repetitions of individual phases. Each phase involves different research data management tasks, which can vary in scope depending on the subject area and research project.

The preparation of data for data sharing (phase 5) should be taken into account when submitting the application for funding. The data preparation takes place during the research project in cooperation between researchers and research data center. In this way, synergies can be utilized, e.g. for the documentation of the data, and the accumulation of work packages at the end of a project can be counteracted. Consider sharing qualitative data and ideally contact a suitable archiving partner before submitting your application.

  • Reflecting on the planned research design with regard to data processing
  • Plan the data management areas (e.g. legal and ethical aspects, storage, naming, documentation, archiving and provision)
  • Defining responsibilities for data processing
  • Contacting research data centers for questions of data sharing and/or subsequent use
  • If necessary, localize existing data and plan subsequent use
  • Submit funding application
  • Planning data acquisition through data collection and/or secondary use
  • Designing study information and template for informed consent
  • Access to the field and/or research data center
  • Locate existing data and check the fit to your research interest (data fit)
  • Prepare data for analysis (transcribe, annotate, anonymize, pseudonymize, document)
  • Use tools
  • Analyze data
  • Expand/modify database (phase 2)
  • Record results
  • Documentation of results and approach
  • Selection of material sequences
  • Publication of the results in professional journals
  • Entering into a data transfer agreement with the selected research data center
  • Accompanied data preparation for subsequent use during the research project
  • Handing over the prepared data to the selected research data center
  • Recording the context of data creation and the potential for reuse
  • Curation of the data in the research data center
  • Release of the data sets by data providers
  • Publication of the metadata, sustainable archiving and provision of the research data by the research data center
